Under the Residential Protective Plumbing program, as updated by the City in April 2025, eligible homes can get up to $1,000 for an interior backwater valve, $2,500 for an exterior storm backwater valve, $1,500 for a sump pump in an existing pit, $3,000 for a sump pump in a new pit, plus 100% of the building permit fee. The work must be done by a licensed plumbing contractor, under a building permit, on a new installation (replacements do not qualify). You apply after the work is done, with the permit and invoice. We prepare the paperwork.
In 2026 an interior backwater valve retrofit typically costs $1,800 to $4,500 before the rebate, depending on how deep the pipe is and what is in the way. Complex jobs can cost more.
Many Canadian insurers ask if a valve is installed before offering sewer backup coverage, or offer a better rate if you do. Ask your broker; we give you an invoice and photos to send them.
Open the access cover two or three times a year, check that the flap moves freely and clear any debris. Don't run water while the valve is closed during a storm.
In older homes we recommend it. It confirms where the pipe runs, how deep it is, and whether it has roots or damage that should be fixed at the same time.
